Privacy

AviationWiser has no accounts and shows no advertising. This page explains what is collected when you visit.

No accounts, and search stays in your browser

There is no registration and no login. The site loads no external fonts. Search runs entirely in your browser from a static index file; what you type is not sent anywhere.

Google Analytics

To count visits, this site can use Google Analytics 4, a web analytics service of Google LLC, but only if you agree. On your first visit a banner asks whether you accept cookies for visitor statistics; “Accept” and “Reject” are equally easy, and the site works the same either way. Until you accept, Google Analytics is not loaded and no cookie is set. Your choice is kept only in your browser (a local-storage entry named aw-consent), not in a cookie and not on our server. You can change it at any time under “Cookie settings” at the bottom of every page; if you withdraw your consent, Google Analytics is switched off and its cookies on this site are deleted.

If you accept, Google Analytics sets first-party cookies in your browser (named _ga and _ga_ followed by the property identifier; by default they last up to two years) so that it can tell returning browsers and separate visits apart. We use Google’s consent mode: every advertising purpose stays switched off, and only the analytics measurement is allowed.

Google receives the pages you view, your browser and device (browser, operating system, screen size and language), your approximate location derived from your IP address, and the page that referred you. Google does not log full IP addresses for Google Analytics 4.

We use these figures only in aggregate, to see which tools are used and to improve the site. No advertising features of Google Analytics are used. You can opt out with Google’s browser add-on for opting out of Google Analytics. How Google uses data from sites that use its services is described on Google’s partner sites page.

Server logs

Like any website, the hosting provider's web server records standard access logs (requested address, time, browser type, IP address) for operation and security. They are not used to identify or profile visitors.

Live aviation data

The METAR Decoder and the TAF Timeline Visualizer fetch current public weather reports from NOAA’s Aviation Weather Center (aviationweather.gov) through this site’s own server, so your browser never contacts the data provider. What is sent is only the airport identifier you ask for (for example KJFK); the Aviation Weather Center sees this site’s server, not you. Each report is shown with its source, its observation or issue time, when it was retrieved and how fresh it is.

To stay within the provider’s limits, the server keeps the weather reports it fetched for a short time (minutes for METARs and TAFs, a day for station information) and counts requests per connection. The counter is stored under a one-way scrambled form of your IP address (with a random value unique to this site), not the address itself, and is deleted after about two hours. The relay sets no cookie and nothing in it is used to identify or profile you.

Popular tools

To rank the popular tools on the home page, the site keeps anonymous view counts per tool. When a tool page is opened, your browser sends only the tool’s short internal identifier to this site’s own server, which adds one to that tool’s total. Only these per-tool totals are kept. This counter sets no cookie, collects no personal data and stores no IP address.

So that reloading a page is not counted again and again, a view of the same tool from the same connection counts once per hour. For that hour only, the server keeps a one-way scrambled value made from the connection and the tool with a random value that is replaced every hour; it is kept apart from the counts and deleted when the hour ends. Automated visitors and the test copy of the site are not counted.
